Denied boarding on Air France — the strongest claim in the regime

Written for travel agents by Nathan Zarcaro, founder of MyAirAdvocate · Updated August 2026

If Air France refused your client a seat they held a confirmed booking for — checked in and at the gate on time — they’re owed €250–€600 per passenger on the spot, plus a refund or re-route and care while they wait. Article 4 has no extraordinary-circumstances defence. The only fight is whether your client volunteered.

QUALIFY IT

Involuntary, and on time

Air France oversells transatlantic economy routinely and asks for volunteers at the gate, offering vouchers and hotel nights. A client who accepts is a volunteer and waives Article 7 compensation. Coach clients to say no; the involuntary bump pays €600 in cash.

On-time test: AF gates close 20 minutes before departure on most routes, boarding closes earlier on long-haul. A client at the gate before close with a confirmed seat and no seat given is a denied boarding.

Downgrades from La Première or Business to Economy are an Article 10 refund of 30–75% of the fare, on top of nothing else — a different claim, still worth filing.

THE MONEY

What is it worth?

€250

Under 1,500 km

€400

1,500–3,500 km

€600

Over 3,500 km

Per passenger — payable immediately under Article 4(3).

Under 1,500 km €250 · 1,500–3,500 km €400 · over 3,500 km €600, per passenger, owed the day it happens. Transatlantic bumps are €600s. AF may halve it if the re-route arrives within two, three, or four hours of the original by distance — rare on a long-haul overnight.

THE PUSHBACK

What Air France will say

No defence exists for an involuntary bump, so the reply argues facts: the client volunteered, or was late. A time-stamped gate photo and the boarding pass with the close time settle both.

AF’s gate agents document volunteers carefully. If your client signed nothing and accepted nothing, say so plainly — the absence of a signed voucher is the evidence.

THE EDGE

What’s specific to Air France

Report the bump the same day; flight data never sees a gate refusal.

AF’s volunteer vouchers are generous by design — sometimes above the cash amount. They still cost the client their Article 7 right. Cash is transferable to real life; an AF voucher is not.

MTV and the five-year window apply as on every AF claim; bumps rarely reach mediation because the facts are simple.

Reading this as the passenger, not the agent? The plain-English version for your own trip: bumped from a flight — your rights.

THE PLAY

How do you file it?

1

Record the denied boarding on the trip the same day — the claim generates from it.

2

Ask the gate for the refusal in writing or a staff name and time.

3

File through AF’s compensation request citing Article 4; attach the boarding pass.

4

Refuse any voucher offered after the fact.

AGENTS ASK

Questions agents ask

They took the €800 voucher and the hotel — anything left?

+

Compensation is waived by volunteering. Care was owed anyway; keep receipts for anything the hotel didn’t cover.

Refused because the aircraft was swapped — a bump?

+

Yes. A confirmed seat withdrawn for operational reasons is involuntary denied boarding.

Does AF have to put them on Delta if that’s the next flight?

+

Re-routing at the earliest opportunity, any carrier, is owed. AF prefers its own metal; insist if the alternative is a day sooner.

Is there a weather defence?

+

No. Article 4 has no extraordinary-circumstances exemption of any kind.

How fast does AF pay a bump?

+

Faster than its delays — three to five weeks when the gate facts are attached.
