Does my missed Virgin Atlantic connection qualify?
Both flights must be on one booking. Virgin sells connections on one ticket with its SkyTeam partners and with Delta, so most Heathrow connections booked together qualify, including onward flights on Delta, Air France and KLM. Two bookings, a Virgin transatlantic and an onward flight bought separately, are two contracts. The second flight is simply missed.
The delay is measured at your final destination. Say your Virgin flight from Heathrow lands in New York 50 minutes late, you miss your onward flight to Los Angeles on the same booking, and you arrive a day late. That’s a £520 claim against Virgin, because the journey is Heathrow–Los Angeles.
The claim is against the airline that operated the delayed flight. If Virgin’s flight into Heathrow caused the miss, Virgin pays. If a Delta-operated first flight did, the direction rule applies and there may be no claim.

The band follows the whole journey: £520 on any long-haul connection, and on Virgin that’s nearly all of them. A short onward flight after a transatlantic is still a £520 journey. On flights over 3,500 km, an arrival 3 to 4 hours late can be paid at half: £260. From 4 hours it’s the full £520.

What’s specific to Virgin Atlantic
Virgin connections fail between Terminal 3 arrivals and onward flights from Terminal 3 or 4. The Terminal 4 transfer for KLM and Air France adds a bus and a second security check. Connections through Terminal 4 booked at the minimum time are the ones most likely to break.
Virgin’s form has one delay field. Enter the delay at your final destination, explain it, and cite Folkerts.
